As we celebrate our great nation's independence we would like to remember some of those who risked all and fought for that precious gift.

Moses Stuert

In regard to Moses Stuert:
ReplyDeleteI have been photographing tombstones at Old Salem for many years and have some of stones that no longer exist. After obtaining my computer and browsing thru Rootsweb and other site, I received a request from a lady for more pictures of Old Salem and Moses Stuert in particular. I sent what I have and received this from her:
I will tell you what I know of Mr. Stewart or Stuart. First off I believe the headstone was misspelled and once it is as they say, " in stone" it was to late to correct and left as is. In my resaerch, in the early years it was spelled Stuart then later on near the time of his death it was spelled Stewart. His sons Andrew and Moses show up as Stewart.
Well enough of that, Moses married my G-G-G-G-G-Grandmother Issabella-----Lowers. Issabella
[maiden name unknown] married first Andrew Lowers and had three children to him. Andrew Lowers who also joint owned land in the Derry settlement with his brother Robert Lowers. Andrew however died in Cumberland CO. Issabellas daughter, my g-g-g-g-grandmother Mary Lowers married Thomas Wilkins and was very early in the Derry settlement, 1768. The Wilkins and the Stewarts lived in the northern part of the county along with John Wilkins, brother of Thomas. They all lived east of Blairsville and north of the Conemaugh. If you are familiar with the area, Rt 22 goes through my Thomas Wilkins place. Their is a golf course where his farm was. Then Stewarts was north of Thomas Wilkins place.
Back to Moses. Moses and my Issabella were marrried in 1760 in York, York CO Pa. I found the marriage record of this in LDS Records. On the records it says that she is the widow of Andrew Lowers.
I dont know who was over in Derry first, but I think it may have been Moses. I have the warrent for my Thomas Wilkins first parcel and it lists Moses as one of his neighbors. I also find that Moses and Issabella had at least two sons, Andrew and Moses Jr. Those two migrated to Ohio and died there.
I wonder if Moses had been married before he married my ancestor. He was very old when he married her and also joined the Revolutionary war as a member of the Westmoreland CO Militia.
That is about all I have on Mr. Stewart to this point. Rest assured I will keep on searching for more answers
